October 2009 Community Partners Reception

The Department of Government and International Relations, its staff, and its students have profited over the years from the support, assistance, encouragement, and resources of many members of its communities, including, particularly but not exclusively, alumni. In 2009 it embarked on a project to more systematically engage with its communities. This video is a record of the first step in that process.

Michael, The difference between sound philosophic argument and mere rhetoric is that the former addresses the opposing argument in its strongest form, while the latter attacks a caricature of the argument. Alas, I believe your two “passion vs. plod” postings are mostly rhetoric. Granted, many self-declared passionate people are mere windbags — but then you also characterize the hyper-energetic LBJ as passionate. In ordinary laguage, ‘passionate’ describes a state of mind, while ‘plod(ding)’ describes an approach to action. It’s folly to compare the two because they are not mutually exclusive. If you insist on such a comparison, then the LBJ-Ike pairing could be offset by any number of examples in which the passionate actor was more praiseworthy than the uninspired plodder — which, again, would not prove anything.
